In 2024, Paul Harty and his team at O'Brien Electrical Greensborough marked a significant milestone — two decades of partnership with the O’Brien and Laser Group, an achievement underscored by business growth, innovation, and strong community ties.

Paul is a trailblazer in the Network and has been a key player in the numerous charity fundraising and Taskforce giving-back initiatives over the years.

As we celebrate Paul’s 20-year journey with us, we look back on how his commitment to excellence and the support system of the O’Brien and Laser Group contributed to the longevity of his business in Victoria.

Joining the O'Brien Network: A Transformational Step

Paul’s relationship with O’Brien began in 2004, when his Greensborough electrical business joined the O'Brien Network, which was then known as Laser Electrical and Plumbing. Paul’s business was the first to join when the Network launched in Australia.

Paul established his business in 1987 and had grown a successful operation. However, it was the decision to join O’Brien that marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with even greater possibilities. He quickly recognised that O’Brien was not just a network but a family of businesses committed to helping each other thrive. Paul said:

“It gives you someone to lean on, especially in the early days,”

Joining the Network brought advantages with it, like a bigger brand name. Paul said:

“My wife, Jenni, and I started the business together, and she handled the bookkeeping and invoicing. In 2004, I decided to change the name on the front door because I felt we needed a recognised brand, not just a personal name. That’s why we joined Laser — because it offered that reliable branding.”

Technological Improvements and Staying Ahead

One of the significant advantages of being part of the O’Brien Network has been access to cutting-edge technology.

Before joining the franchise, Paul’s business relied on manual processes for job tracking and invoicing. O’Brien helped Paul streamline these processes. The introduction of software like LaserPrO’ was a game-changer for the business, enabling Paul to scale up while maintaining efficiency. Paul said:

“There were big leaps in professionalism and software. In the early days, cash flow was a constant challenge, and I was always chasing payments. Back then, I used to carry a book listing all the jobs, trying to track everything manually. But with Laser and O’Brien, things have changed significantly. The right software made a huge difference — helping us track jobs, invoice faster, and manage everything more efficiently.

Today, the software allows us to easily expand as needed, whether it’s adding more mobile apps or email addresses. It’s seamless support that has helped our business grow.”

This focus on innovation has kept Paul’s business competitive in a fast-evolving industry. Being part of the O’Brien Network provided resources and tools that would have been difficult for a small, independent business to implement on its own.

Expansion and Embracing Change

From an already strong electrical division, Paul expanded into the plumbing market, an area led by his nephew. Today, Paul’s business operates with a team of around 30 employees across both divisions, allowing them to maintain a strong presence in the electrical and plumbing sectors.

The expansion into the Melbourne CBD market has not been without its challenges. Paul acknowledges that it is a competitive space with many players. However, with the opening of a new office in Collingwood, his business is well-positioned to tap into the potential of the vibrant Melbourne CBD.

The diverse service offering, along with a strong team, has enabled Paul’s company to take on larger projects and cater to a wider customer base.

Networking and Community: The O'Brien Advantage

One of the most rewarding aspects of Paul’s journey with O’Brien has been the power of its community. Being part of the O'Brien family has enabled Paul to leverage the strength of the network, allowing his business to expand its reach and tackle large-scale projects.

A key example of this is the company’s ability to service national clients like 7-Eleven and Starbucks, providing solutions across hundreds of stores in Australia. The trust and connection within the network make these large-scale projects possible. Paul said:

“We’ve been providing service to 7-Eleven and petrol stations for over 20 years, solving problems nationally thanks to the support of the O'Brien Group. They could give us a single issue, and we’d be able to fix it across 700 stores in Australia.

Our strength lies in reliability, prompt service, and effectively solving customer problems.”

The annual O’Brien conferences have also played a crucial role in Paul’s journey. Having attended more than 20 conferences, Paul views these events as an essential part of his professional development.

The blend of learning from industry experts and connecting with other Members creates an environment where both personal and business growth flourish. Paul said:

“The networking and friendships from the conferences are the most important part of the O'Brien Network. It gives you people you can talk to, learn from, and share experiences with. Everyone is like-minded and in a similar position, which makes those connections the best part of being in the Network.”

Paul also values the opportunity to bring his staff to these conferences, giving them a break from the usual work environment while investing in their professional growth.

A Story of Success in the Network

Paul Harty’s 20-year journey with O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing showcases the power of connection, community, and adaptability.

His business’s growth from a small family operation into a national provider of electrical and plumbing services is a testament to the value of partnership within the O’Brien Network. Paul said:

“To those looking for support in growing their business and managing the day-to-day, it’s a great group to be part of. The Network helps you step forward in your business much faster than you would on your own.

It offers honest support, from providing the right tools and resources to fixing issues quickly. It’s like having a professional team backing you, so you can stay ahead of the competition.”

Supported by a strong team and a commitment to innovation, Paul’s business continues to thrive, and his future remains bright as he looks ahead to new challenges and opportunities.

Did you know that in 2022 32% of Australia’s total electricity generation came from renewable energy sources?. Let’s take a look at some of the ways O’Brien electricians and plumbers are using eco-friendly solar technology.

Solar Power

Electricians commonly promote sustainability through solar power, offering customers the chance to enhance their energy savings with solar storage systems.

When utilising solar panels, surplus solar power typically goes back to the grid when the sun sets. Utilising solar batteries or self-consumption is a clever method to make the most of the power generated during the day. Solar batteries enable you to store unused power for use at night or during adverse weather conditions. Many O’Brien Electrical businesses specialise in solar installations and can help you from the initial design to the completion of solar projects.

Solar Powered EV Chargers

Now, more than ever we are opting for eco-friendly solutions to help reduce our carbon footprint. An example of this is sustainable EV Charging stations that are solar powered. You may be able to power your EV Charging stations using your home solar panels. Using self generated solar electricity can save you on energy costs. If you’re interested in learning more contact your local O’Brien Electrician today.

Solar thermal heaters

How are you heating your household water? Not only can you use solar power to heat your home, you can also use it to heat your water. If you are using gas or electric heating sources for this, you may want to consider solar. Using solar to heat your water uses less natural resources.

Solar thermal heaters heat water using the sun’s thermal energy, conducted through solar thermal panels. The panel consists of tubes filled with a liquid, often glycol with antifreeze. The Sun heats the liquid, which then warms your hot water tank.

O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing experts are here to help guide customers in sustainable technology as we become more aware of the impacts of climate change. We also recognise the effects of sustainable technology on energy costs, including types of products you’re currently using, fuel costs and variations in electricity supply and demand

O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing is committed to providing customers with eco-friendly technology options so that together we can help reduce our impact on the environment. Find your local expert by going to obrien.com.au.

Plumbing upgrades and maintenance are important in reducing water wastage and saving you on expensive plumbing problems in the future. Over time pipes can weather, rust and corrode. An outdated plumbing system can cause havoc on your home’s plumbing functionality.

How do you know when it’s time to upgrade your plumbing? We’ve consulted our O'Brien plumbing experts and here are the top 5 signs your plumbing system needs to be refurbished.

1. Noisy pipes

Water is meant to run smoothly through pipes, noisy and rattling pipes could be due to a number of factors. These include water hammer, loose piping, worn out washers, faulty valves and worn out assembly. A high pitched sound is usually worn out washers whereas a water hammer is a low vibrational sound. If left unattended these noisy pipes can cause leaks and damage to the property.
Call an O'Brien plumbing expert to secure your pipework and ensure they don’t cause further problems down the track.

2. Low water pressure

Showering with low water pressure? Taps hardly running? This could be due to worn out shut off valves that may reduce the flow of water. It may be time for an upgrade as the worn out valves can’t handle the capacity of water flowing through. An experienced O'Brien plumber can help you locate the issue and solve the water pressure problem.

3. Corroded pipes

Over time corrosion can happen to your pipes, affecting the pipes from the inside and out. If your pipes need maintenance or repairs it may be time to upgrade. Different materials last longer than others, but no matter the material pipes wear out depending on usage.

The potential lifespan of different pipe materials:

Copper: 50 years

Brass: 80-100 years

Galvanised steel: 60-70 years

UPVC: 100years

It may be the case for some older houses that lead pipes are used. In the 1980s lead pipes were banned from production due to not being safe. If your current home plumbing system involves lead pipes we recommend making a system upgrade a priority.

Talk to an O'Brien plumbing expert about your options, we suggest using UPVC, PEX and copper for your plumbing lines.

4. Water discolouration

Water discolouration is a telltale sign that your plumbing system needs an upgrade. Sometimes the problem is temporary and can be fixed by letting the water run for 10-15 minutes. The most common reason is corrosion which we explained earlier, though it could also be due to a faulty valve or a reverse flow. A plumbing professional can conduct a thorough inspection of the plumbing system and help you find a solution.

5. Vent and Drain Lines

Another important aspect of your home’s plumbing system is drain and vent lines. They are crucial components of your home’s sewer system. Drain and vent lines assist in the circulation loop and smooth running of your home’s sewerage system. Many vents don’t open to ‘free’ air which is a pivotal component to regulating the air pressure within the plumbing.
If you notice your toilet bubbling and water level rising and falling it may be a sign that it’s time to overhaul your current plumbing lines.

O'Brien plumbers can retrofit and replace damaged pipes, repair leaks or perform a complete plumbing system upgrade. If you start to notice any of the above issues, jump on the phone today for a quote.

We’d like to congratulate Phill and Lisa Craig on their decision to expand their operations into the South Australian market to form O'Brien Electrical & Plumbing Grange. The husband and wife duo currently own and operate O'Brien Electrical & Plumbing Vermont in Victoria and joined the network in 2006 (as the first Member in the plumbing network in Australia).

Ben Seedon, Plumbing Service Manager for O'Brien Electrical & Plumbing Grange says “There was an opportunity for Phill to expand the business into Adelaide as I was moving cities from Melbourne to Adelaide to live closer to family. The business decision to move into the SA market made sense as we could service some of our national clients locally in each city. I’m excited to continue to provide our current clients with quality workmanship and service, and to now expand our services in our local area to make a positive impact in the local Grange community.”

The expansion into the South Australian market was the next logical step for Phill and Lisa with the business specialising in commercial electrical & plumbing maintenance, general works, emergency plumbing and air conditioning; the business has established its electrical and plumbing team over the past 2.5 years and is steadily growing both trades.

Shawn Tracey, Head of Network Growth for O'Brien Electrical & Plumbing says “Phill and Lisa have proven themselves as great business operators but also as Members who are invested in the betterment of the O'Brien network and brand. They have seen consistent growth within their O'Brien Electrical & Plumbing Vermont business while building future value for their employees by expanding their business footprint. Phill and Lisa’s commitment to expansion within O'Brien is exciting and a real testament to the hard work they’ve both put in over the years.”

Iain Hunter, Area Manager for SA and WA says “O'Brien Electrical & Plumbing Vermont’s expansion into SA with the establishment of O'Brien Electrical & Plumbing Grange’s operation recognises the opportunity to build the value proposition of the O'Brien/Laser group. Adding their unique skills, resources and personalities to our SA Network Hub increases the wealth of our collective family of businesses. We look forward to their contribution to our overall growth and culture as we move into a new period of prosperity.”
