O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing Rowville aimed to deliver a cutting-edge residential project in Kew, showcasing sustainable, all-electric living with luxury and energy efficiency. 

The objective was to integrate high-end amenities, such as an underground garage, gym, elevator, and swimming pool, with environmentally responsible systems. The in-house electrical design team focused on long-term sustainability and smart energy use, selecting components that aligned with modern eco-conscious standards to create a high-tech, environmentally sustainable, and energy-independent property.

Challenges

From the project’s inception, close coordination with the builder and homeowner needed to have a seamless execution that matched the client’s vision while highlighting O’Brien’s technical capabilities. This collaborative effort led to a successful integration of solar and electrical solutions, reflecting the company’s dedication to sustainable construction.

Solutions

Central to the home’s sustainability strategy is a 12.35kW solar panel system, comprising Jinko solar panels and a 10kW GoodWe inverter. This solar system is connected to a Tesla Powerwall battery with backup functionality, offering reliable, renewable power even during outages.

To further support green living, the home includes an electric vehicle (EV) charging station in the basement, induction cooking appliances in the kitchen, and energy-efficient underfloor heating and heated towel rails in the bathrooms. Two Emerald Planet heat pumps were also installed, providing a low-impact solution for hot water heating.

The residence also boasts a sophisticated lighting and security setup. LED strip lighting, tailored indoor and outdoor illumination, pool lighting and electricals, and a high-tech surveillance and sensor system offer modern comforts with minimal energy consumption. Each feature was carefully selected to reduce energy use while maintaining a sleek and functional design.

Outcomes

This Kew home sets a new standard in sustainable residential design. With a balance of luxury, innovation, and environmental responsibility, the property has earned industry recognition, receiving a Commendation award from the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA).

Objective

O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing Rowville was entrusted with the full scope of electrical and communication services for Padua College in Mornington.

This was designed to be a state-of-the-art Educational Precinct designed to accommodate over 550 Year 7 and 8 students and staff. The impressive new development included modern classrooms, STEM learning areas, an amphitheatre, staff offices, and administrative zones—offering an advanced learning environment that reflects contemporary educational needs.

O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing Rowville’s responsibilities encompassed supply, installation, energisation, and commissioning across the new site, as well as integrating systems with the college’s existing infrastructure. 

The goal was to ensure that the new and old facilities worked in harmony, creating a seamless, functional space for staff and students.

What was the work involved?

This project, led by Head of Commercial Construction Michael Ralph and his experienced team, required a wide array of technical work. Tasks included laying underground conduits, modifying and installing switchboards, and running sub mains cabling. The team also delivered an advanced lighting system, including emergency and exit lighting, general power installations, and skirting ducts. Communication upgrades featured new infrastructure, data racks, and fibre connections, along with a campus-wide PA system complete with hearing augmentation.

A standout feature of the precinct is the amphitheatre, where an artistic LED lighting arrangement enhances the steps, walls, and seating, all focused around a central pendant light. Power outlets were discreetly installed beneath the seating, supported by new underground conduits and cabling, showcasing both design sophistication and practicality.

Outcome

The project was not only completed to a high standard but also delivered on schedule by January 2024 and within budget. This timely delivery ensured students could begin the academic year in their new facility.

In line with their mission to support sustainability and cost-effective solutions, the team was recently asked to complete commercial solar installation for Lynden Aged Care, while keeping in mind the facility’s environmental and budget goals.

O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing Rowville is a multi-service provider that goes beyond traditional electrical work. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, the company offers a full range of services including solar energy systems, LED lighting upgrades, heating and cooling solutions, and heat pump installations. 

These offerings are designed to help both residential and commercial customers reduce their energy consumption and long-term costs.

Challenges

Lynden Aged Care, a residential care provider established in 1982 and has capacity for over 100 residents, was in the midst of a major facility upgrade. Looking to lower their electricity expenses and minimise environmental impact, they partnered with O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing Rowville to implement a tailored solar solution.

This Member needed to seamlessly integrate into operational facilities without disruption as there were ongoing activities and they needed to ensure minimal impact on daily operations.  

Solutions

To address Lynden’s needs, O’Brien designed and installed a 99.75kW solar energy system. The setup includes 210 Jinko Solar Tiger Neo panels and a Sungrow SG110CX inverter—components chosen for their efficiency and reliability. The system is projected to generate over 140,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually with an estimated system efficiency of 87%.

Outcomes

The installation offers substantial financial benefits for Lynden Aged Care. In just the first year, they are projected to cut their energy bills by 21%, leading to estimated annual savings of nearly $90,000 in future years. Over time, the solar investment is expected to deliver an impressive 406% return on investment, highlighting the economic value of transitioning to renewable energy.

Beyond cost savings, the environmental contribution is equally noteworthy. The solar system will help Lynden Aged Care avoid burning over 47,000 kilograms of coal annually. This environmental benefit is equivalent to planting more than 2,500 trees each year, significantly lowering the facility’s carbon footprint and aligning with their goal of operating sustainably.
