There is glass, and then there is O’Brien Glass. In a sector shaped by deadlines, design demands and strict codes, this century-old name moves with purpose and precision.

There is glass, and then there is O’Brien Glass. In a sector shaped by deadlines, design demands and strict codes, this century-old name moves with purpose and precision, evident on Castlereagh Street in Sydney.

Commercial glazing can introduce a building before anyone steps inside. It speaks to purpose, presence and precision – all in a single glance. Whether bold or understated, it cues the experience inside and anchors the architecture to its intent.

From multi-storey façades to shopfronts that double as statements, the work of O’Brien Glass’ dedicated Building & Fitout team spans the architectural and the everyday – often in the same week.

“The industry has become much more regulated over the past 10 years,” says Benton Duthie, head of B2B property at O’Brien. “There is greater competition and a stronger emphasis on formal tendering. While long-standing relationships still carry weight, pricing and compliance now play a bigger role.”

Rather than duck for cover, the business made a deliberate pivot. A dedicated team now focuses solely on commercial construction and retail fit-outs, with its own estimators,

national systems and in-house fabrication. The aim is to channel specialist attention and deeper expertise into an area that demands both.

Not just another pane

The results speak through projects like Castlereagh Street in Sydney. What could have been a routine café install turned into an 18-month journey of engineering and finesse. The brief? Seamless, curved glazing with built-in LED lighting, designed to span the interior and exterior of a high-profile site. The client wanted style, substance and zero surprises.

“The architects were heavily involved and had a clear vision for a seamless curved design, with all the glass panels aligning precisely,” says Raj Murugesu, national building and fitout manager at O’Brien. “The level of precision required was significant, and because it is located on a prominent street frontage, the end result needed to meet both aesthetic and functional expectations.”

Meeting the brief meant tackling uneven flooring, navigating complexities around lighting and solving design kinks in real time.

“Castlereagh Street was a challenging project, but that is where we add real value. We are not just about delivering what is on paper; we actively solve problems along the way,” says Duthie.

“When challenges arise, we focus on finding practical solutions in partnership with the client, rather than taking a fixed or transactional stance. Each project is treated with a high level of care and commitment. We are genuinely invested in every project we take on.”

But bespoke builds are only one half of the equation. At the other end sits anti-theft glazing for retail chains, high-volume door replacements and pragmatic shopfront upgrades. The same rigour applies.

“We are just as focused on more standard façade replacements and commercial fit-outs,” says Duthie. “It is about maintaining a strong balance between custom, high-spec work and the day-to-day glazing needs of our clients.”

Coast-to-coast capability

Operating nationally means no room for weak links. O’Brien has locations nationwide with a spread of regional hubs, each with fabrication capabilities and quality assurance processes baked in. This is not a central office operation relying on satellite support. O’Brien ensures quality and consistency through local delivery.

“It is always a challenge, but O’Brien Glass operates as a truly national business,” says Duthie. “We also maintain a strong subcontractor network that gives us flexibility in labour, allowing us to scale up or down depending on the needs of each project.”

The team behind this reach includes six full-time estimating and workflow specialists, led by Murugesu. Combined with a project-by-project logistics strategy, it is a model designed to cut delays, not corners. This structure also allows for the kind of centralised quality assurance that avoids costly missteps on site.

“All materials are delivered to our branches before going to site,” says Duthie. “That gives us an opportunity to check the product as it arrives and again before it is dispatched, verifying both quality and accuracy.”

Murugesu adds: “One of the key tools we use is an inspection test plan. This outlines a step-by-step process for checking materials – before they arrive, on delivery to site, during installation and afterwards.”

Made to measure

In-house fabrication gives O’Brien an edge. Instead of waiting for third-party lead times or overseas orders, the business can turn around customised solutions in shorter windows. Control stays close, quality stays high, and adjustments don’t rely on outside hands.

That control also extends to compliance. With a dedicated technical standards manager and consistent national training, the business treats regulation as integral to project delivery rather than a procedural hurdle.

“We have national systems in place to support compliance,” says Duthie. “If there is any uncertainty, it goes through a defined review process. It is not something we leave to chance.”

Safety gets the same treatment. Each branch has access to health and safety specialists, who work side by side with estimation and delivery teams. Site-specific risks are reviewed early and addressed accordingly.

“There is a strong focus on collaboration between these groups to ensure safety is considered from the outset,” says Duthie.

Trust with a track record

In a market where contractors can appear and disappear with each ABN, continuity matters. That is where the O’Brien 100-year pedigree comes into focus.

“We stand by our work, and we are upfront from the beginning about what can be delivered,” says Duthie. “Our reputation is built on accountability and longevity.”

That same clarity plays out in how the business responds to shifting client concerns. When one partner flagged a spike in break-ins, O’Brien developed a customised Anti-Intruder Entrance Solution. What began as a one-off is now an option for clients across Australia.

“We were working with a client we had a strong relationship with, and during those conversations, they raised concerns about a rise in break-ins. They asked if we had anything that could help,” says Duthie.

“We listen closely, respond decisively, and shape our solutions around the needs of our clients. Strong relationships are essential. While we remain competitive on pricing, our focus is on building long-term partnerships.”

Reflecting on impact

Sustainability is on everyone’s agenda, and O’Brien is turning environmental commitments into everyday processes. Recycled glass and supply chain transparency are all standard practice.

“Internally, we have recycling processes in place for glass and other materials, and we actively track and report on those outcomes within the business,” says Duthie. “We also place a strong focus on supply chain transparency, including compliance with modern slavery requirements. As a business of our scale, we take that responsibility seriously and maintain clear oversight of where and how our materials are sourced.”

In addition, O’Brien is keeping pace with advancements in glass and material technologies, prioritising products with lower environmental impact wherever possible.

“It is about staying closely connected to both our own practices and broader industry shifts, to ensure we continue to meet evolving sustainability expectations,” says Duthie.

The business is also preparing for a wave of remedial work, as a generation of low-quality glass reaches the end of its life.

“During the building boom 10 to 20 years ago, many large-scale projects used cheaper products,” says Duthie. “We are now seeing the effects of that, as some of that glass reaches the end of its service life.”

What builders want

What does value look like in today’s commercial building and fit-out market? It is not just price per square metre. It is delivery certainty, custom capability and clarity when plans change.

“Our scale and experience give us the ability to be more flexible with delivery timelines, which is critical in fast-paced projects,” says Murugesu. “Our team can offer innovative, customised solutions where needed, and that is underpinned by the trust that comes with the O’Brien name.”

Looking ahead, Duthie predicts greater demand for more sustainable materials and continued innovation in glass technology.

“Energy efficiency, solar protection and smart glass features – such as switchable films that can act like digital screens or adjustable shading – will influence how glass is specified and installed,” he says.

As the demands grow sharper, O’Brien continues to meet them with clarity and craft.

There are two aspects to producing really cutting-edge – no pun intended – glass solutions: superior safety technology and industry-leading security features. O’Brien is acknowledged as the best in the glass sector at both safety and security, routinely supplying glass products to high-stakes customers like childcare and aged care facilities, as well as the world’s top retail brands.

Smarter, stronger glass

When safety matters, O’Brien offers a range of glass solutions designed to help protect people and property. Options include glass that breaks into small pellets rather than dangerous shards, heat-strengthened glass and interlayers between panes to enhance the overall structural integrity.

‘We also work with suppliers who provide safety film on the outside of the glass, which further toughens it and makes it break in a safe way,’ says Benton Duthie, O’Brien’s Head of B2B Sales, who explains how glass is installed makes a big difference to how safe and secure it is.

‘For instance, with our Anti-Intruder Entrance Solution, the combination of how the glass and frames are designed, engineered and constructed, how the glass is held in those frames and how they are installed makes it secure.’

Security that buys time – and peace of mind

The security aspects of O’Brien solutions focus on glass that slows down entry into a premises, making it harder for a potential intruder to gain access. This often results in the offender abandoning their attempt and moving on, while also helping to secure the contents inside. Slowing down entry can give security personnel valuable time to respond if they are alerted to a break-in

‘What we do is make sure it’s not easy for someone to break in, while the client can still display their product to their greatest potential. We recently worked with a major retail chain to address significant security and safety challenges. We designed an entrance solution that slows down the break-in process. This means that when an attempt is made and the glass is broken, the site remains safe, but also slows down entry and deters the thieves,’ says Duthie.

Additional features, such as brackets at the base of the frames that prevent doors from being lifted out, further enhance the safety and security of the system, making a big difference.

Transparent innovation

Other emerging glass technologies include a switchable glass film that allows the transparency of the glass to change at the flick of a switch – from fully transparent to opaque – offering both privacy and versatility within the office and commercial space.

‘Whether it’s for privacy, display or aesthetic purposes, this kind of technology shows how far the industry has come,’ says Duthie. ‘And we’re excited about what this kind of innovation makes possible.’

Duthie adds that while clients could choose solid barriers, they often opt for glass to showcase products or let in natural light. ‘We need to make that possible – safely and securely.’

Emergency repair capabilities

Products aside, the O’Brien superior emergency repair capabilities set it apart.

‘Our repair-and-replace business is the core of what we have been doing for decades,’ says Duthie. ‘We have branches in multiple locations across the country, and a network of trusted subcontractors to support our national footprint. We operate 24/7, so clients can call us any time for a “make safe” if there is broken glass. In a night-time emergency, that might mean securing the area with boards and returning in the morning to complete the repair. In other cases, we can provide a first-time fix, repairing the damage on the spot.’

Looking to the future

Looking ahead, O’Brien is focused on strengthening supply chains and ensuring its glass comes from sources that are replenishable and sustainable. ‘Being part of a global entity, we’re constantly looking at overseas trends, especially around the products that enhance security and strength,’ Duthie adds.

Glass may be inherently fragile, but the O’Brien mission is anything but. Duthie notes that the O’Brien team prides themselves on providing solutions that are safe and secure. ‘That’s not easy, because transparent products generally involve glass, and glass, by nature, can break. But our goal is to work with clients to minimise breakages, not just replace the glass over and over again. We support the entire installation process, from quality frames to specialist film that improves strength and safety.

‘Ultimately, it’s about moving the industry forward and giving our customers the confidence that they’re in safe hands,’ Duthie concludes.

As retail crime continues to rise across Australia, shopfront security has become a critical concern for landlords, centre managers and retailers alike. In this article, Benton Duthie, Head of B2B Property at O’Brien Glass, explores the growing risks faced by retail properties – and the proactive, design-conscious solutions now available to help safeguard people, premises and peace of mind.

BENTON DUTHIE – Head of B2B Property, O’Brien Glass

As someone who has spent more than six years working with retail property owners, landlords and centre managers, I understand the pressures that come with balancing customer experience, tenant satisfaction and operational resilience. But in recent years, one issue has sharply climbed the priority list for many of us: security.

Break-ins, vandalism and forced entry attempts are more than just statistics. They disrupt business and shake the confidence of tenants, staff and customers. That’s why at O’Brien Glass, we’ve channelled our expertise into developing the O’Brien Anti-Intruder Entrance Solution — a smarter and stronger front line for your retail property.

The modern shopping centre has evolved into more than just a retail destination, it’s a community hub. However, as foot traffic increases and trading hours extend, the opportunity for after-hours crime can also rise. We’ve seen it firsthand: smash-and-grab and ram-raid incidents targeting all types of tenants and retail products. These aren’t isolated acts they highlight the increasing risks faced by businesses today.

It’s no longer enough to rely on alarms and CCTV alone. Today’s intruders are more brazen, better equipped — and they don’t discriminate. That’s why I see more business owners and operators asking themselves: Is my property secure? And increasingly, they’re turning to us for answers.

Making your shopfront safer

At O’Brien, we don’t just fix broken glass, we provide security glass and solutions that support peace of mind. Our Anti-Intruder Entrance Solution is the perfect example: It’s designed to deter, defend and delay unauthorised entry, using a combination of toughened structural elements and high-performance glazing.

Let’s start with your glass…

At the core of our Anti-Intruder Entrance Solution is Anti-Bandit Glass — a standout in its class. This is more than just thick glass. It is engineered to help resist penetration and delay forced entry, including attacks with objects commonly used in break-ins, such as hammers, bricks or crowbars — giving your property crucial time for security systems or police response to activate. This glass is more commonly used in retail locations that demand an extra layer of protection: shopping centre entrances, tech stores, fashion retailers in urban areas, pharmacies and ATMs. When it comes to securing properties, glass can sometimes be the weakest link.

Traditional shopfront glass, while visually appealing, offers little resistance to a determined intruder. Upgrading to a security glazing solution is a cost-effective way to reduce risk and, in some cases, insurance premiums too.

Security with style

Being secure doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. The solution works to maintain a professional, welcoming aesthetic, because security should be seamless, not intimidating. It’s not just about glass; we take it a level further. Our Anti-Intruder Entrance Solution combines the Anti-Bandit Glass with durable aluminium framing for structural integrity, high-security interlocking mechanisms and a seamless design that maintains a modern aesthetic.

We tailor each installation to suit the exact needs of your property, tenants and layout. The solution offers custom configurations for doors, side windows and full shopfronts. Every component is compliant with Australian standards and comes with project management from quote to completion.

It’s business as usual

One concern I often hear from shopping centre executives is, “Will this disrupt trade?” The simple answer is no. We specialise in end-to-end project management and can work around your operating hours, often having our expert glaziers complete installations after hours or in stages to minimise impact. Whether you manage a single retail outlet, a regional centre, a neighbourhood strip, or a high-density precinct, our team can assess, advise and install with minimal disruption to you and your business.

Always here for you

We offer 24/7 call centre support for make-safe and emergency glass repairs — ready to make the space safe and restore security quickly. With a nationwide network and locally based expert glaziers, we can typically respond when and where you need us.

We stand by our commitment to quality and are also proud to recycle our glass waste, support local communities and hold ourselves to the highest standards of corporate responsibility.

Our team is ready to help. We’ll assess risk, plan your upgrade and install a solution that delivers security and confidence, day and night. Because in today’s world, safety and style go hand-in-hand.

Windows are key to determining the energy efficiency, comfort, and aesthetics of a home or commercial space.

But how do you know which type of window is best for your needs?

At O’Brien Glass®, we pride ourselves on providing quality glazing solutions to everyday Australians, so we’re going to walk you through the differences between the two primary types of windows – single-glazed windows and double-glazed windows, to help you make an informed choice.

What is the difference between double-glazed and single-glazed windows?

Single-glazed windows consist of a single pane of glass. They are the most basic and traditional form of window glazing. While they are popular because they are cheaper upfront and easier to install, they offer less thermal insulation and soundproofing than the double-glazed alternative.

On the other hand, double-glazed windows or units (or ‘DGU’ when speaking in glazing lingo) consist of two pieces of glass separated by a spacer bar and sealed to create an insulating gap. This gap is typically filled with regular air or other gases (such as argon), enhancing thermal and acoustic insulation properties. The double layer of glass significantly reduces heat transfer and noise infiltration compared to single-glazed windows, and as expected, is a costlier option. Nowadays, these types of windows are referred to as Insulated Glass Units (or IGUs).

Where are double-glazed windows and single-glazed windows used?

Single-glazed windows are commonly found in older buildings, homes and other structures that have a single-glazing framework, which would need to be replaced by a builder prior to installing double-glazed glass. They are also used as a budget option or in several instances where double-glazed glass cannot be used, such as:

  • Balustrades and Pool Fences
  • Cabinet Glass
  • Shower screens
  • Splashbacks
  • Tabletops
  • Wired Glass

Double-glazed windows are typically prevalent in newer constructions and buildings located in regions with more volatile weather conditions. This is because of their superior insulation properties which make them ideal for homes and offices in areas with fluctuating hot or cold climates.

Double-glazed windows are becoming increasingly common to mitigate climate concerns, and in urban settings to mitigate noise pollution like main road and air traffic, where the owner/builders want to ensure a quieter indoor environment.

The Benefits of Double-Glazed windows (over Single-Glazed windows)

Double-glazed windows offer several advantages over the single-glazed alternative:

  • Double-glazed windows provide better insulation, reducing energy consumption and lowering heating and cooling costs for occupants.
  • The dual glass panes and their insulating gas layer significantly reduce noise levels, enhancing indoor comfort.
  • Double-glazed windows can improve window security, as they are harder to break when compared to single-glazed options. Whilst double-glazed windows are the costlier option for windows compared to than single-glazed windows, this type of window can help to save money in the long term with lower energy costs, improved safety and increased comfort.

That said, as discussed, there are also many instances in which single-glazed glass are perfect for your home or business and is what you require.

But the benefits of double-glazed windows make this option a worthwhile consideration when assessing what windows to install in your home or business, as they may well be worth the investment, and add to the overall value and enjoyment of your property.

How can O’Brien Glass® help?

The right glazing decision can significantly improve the look and comfort of your space. Our expert team of glaziers can provide advice on the best options available, including double-glazed units, or other solutions like thermal glass, tinting or acoustic treatments that can work with single-glazed options (as an alternative to double-glazed units).

But just as important as deciding between single-glazed glass and double-glazed glass is the installation process.

At O’Brien Glass® we have a range of glazing solutions for your home or business, and our experienced Glaziers who are dedicated to safety can help you find and install the right solution for your needs, as well as help replace any broken or damaged glass.

An impressive display of workmanship by the O'Brien Glass® Hobart glazing team has led to a new relationship with the Grand Chancellor Hotel in Hobart, Tasmania.

The Grand Chancellor Hotel is a 10-storey building overlooking the Harbour in central Hobart. After a recent storm damaged a section of the lower roof, the Hotel was looking for a new glazing supplier who could help with the repair after the original glazing company contracted to do the work refused to touch the project, citing the high risk of injury.

The team at the O'Brien Glass® Hobart was up for the challenge!

The O'Brien Glass® team was tasked with repairing 15 damaged roof panels. We used panels made of 17.52mm laminated heat-strengthened glass weighing 120 kilograms, all made according to templates in various shapes and sizes.

The work was carried out over two days, with four men working on the roof at a time. The glaziers used a scissor lift to reach the rooftop, and a crane was used to lift each glass panel.

At all times, the team ensured there were specialists on-site working with the glaziers to ensure that safety was always a priority, given they were working at such heights. The team was also prepared for the cold weather, wearing (lots of) thermals to stay warm.

The O’Brien Glass® team worked to complete the project on time and within budget, and the Grand Chancellor was thrilled with the workmanship and service provided by the glaziers. The newly installed panels will help to secure the structural integrity of the roof for many years to come with the  O'Brien® Glazing Workmanship Guarantee.

“Our contact at The Grand Chancellor was pleased with the results and expressed his gratitude to our team. They went above and beyond in their workmanship, and their expertise shined through on this project. A massive thank you to our whole Hobart glazing crew!” – Kelly, O'Brien Glass® Hobart Branch Manager

The challenges of the project

The team faced a range of challenges throughout, including:

  • The immense weight of the glass

The weight of the glass panels was a significant obstacle to overcome. Each panel weighing 120 kilograms was difficult to lift and manoeuvre.

  • The difficult height of the building

The height of the roof was measured to be 15 metres high, making it difficult for the glaziers to work safely. Our team used safety harnesses and ropes to secure themselves, and they worked with a team of fall prevention specialists to ensure each member was always safe.

  • The cold weather

The harsh Tasmanian weather proved to be another significant challenge. The appointment date needed to be rescheduled three times before the project could be carried out due to harsh winter conditions that were often below freezing. In the end, the team wore thermals to stay warm, and they took breaks throughout the day to warm up and ensure they could return to work safely.

The importance of safety

Safety was always top of mind for the team throughout the project, as with every O'Brien Glass® job. As well as collaborating with and supporting one another, each of our glazing specialists worked with a fall prevention specialist who ensured all safety precautions were met.  The glaziers all wore safety harnesses to secure themselves as well as all necessary glazing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

O'Brien Glass® glaziers are trained professionals who specialise in installing glass according to Australian Safety standards, which means they have the knowledge and skills necessary to install pet doors in glass safely and securely.

Our glazing experts will assist you in choosing the most suitable option from our range of tried and tested, multi-featured pet doors designed to fit the tiniest fur babies to a larger breed.

After you have arranged an appointment with our glazing experts via phone, our glaziers will take care of the rest.

Here are the steps to getting a pet door installed with O'Brien Glass®

On the first visit, we’ll

  1. Measure and Prepare: Accurate measurements are crucial for a successful installation. Our glaziers will come around to inspect where you plan on installing the pet door and measure the space to ensure it meets the minimum panel size required for the pet door size to ensure a precise fit. The glazier can also recommend alternative locations for the pet door if needed.
  2. Ordering: Our glazier will order the new pet door. We then work on creating your custom-made toughened glass panel to the required size (that will also have a cut-out for the pet door). Customizing your new glass panel to your measurements and chosen pet door can take up to 14 days.

About two weeks later, on the second visit, we’ll

  1. Install the new glass with the pet door cut-out: Our glazier will remove your existing glass panel and install your custom-made toughened safety glass panel with the pet door inserted into it. They will secure the new toughened panel firmly in place to ensure durability and stability, taking the necessary steps to weatherproof the installation to prevent drafts, water leakage or unwanted pests from entering your home.

If your custom-made toughened glass panel requires tinting or film applied, we can also help with that. To read more about the benefits of using tinting and film on glass in your home, click here.

  1. Testing and Adjustments: Once the installation is complete, our glaziers will meticulously test the functionality of the pet door. They ensure that it operates smoothly, allowing your pets to pass through easily. If needed, they make minor adjustments to optimise the door’s performance.
  2. Maintenance and Care: Our glaziers will also advise you on how to maintain the pet door. This includes providing instructions on regular cleaning, and lubrication of moving parts, to ensure the door remains in optimal condition for long-term use. We recommend referring to the pet door manufacturer’s instructions that will be included in the pet door box.

Then it’s over to you and your pet

Now you’re all set to start getting your pet used to their new door! Remember that a new door is a new experience for your pet, so it takes time to get them used to using the door. From encouraging them to approach the door to teaching them to push through with treats, you should have them going in and out with a bit of encouragement and patience.

So, remember, if you’re considering installing a pet door in glass in your home, it’s important to hire a professional glazier. They will ensure that the installation is done correctly and safely using toughened glass, so you can have peace of mind knowing that your pet door is secure, and your family and pet are safe.

Pets are considered a cherished part of the family for good reason. All pets bring so much joy to the household, no matter how big or small.

According to the RSPCA, there are currently over 29 million pets in Australia, that’s at least 61% of households and one of the highest percentages of pet ownership per country worldwide!

If you’re a pet owner and proud fur parent, you know how much your four-legged friend loves to venture out and about. Pets enjoy exploring the outdoors as much as they love following you around indoors. However, letting your pet in and out by opening and closing doors for them many times a day and through the night can become tiring and an inconvenience.

A pet door is a simple solution that will allow your precious furry friends to go in and out as they please, conveniently for everyone.  In this blog, we’ll discuss the benefits of pet doors and cover some key things to consider when looking for the right solution for you, your pet and your home, which is a pet door in glass.

About pet doors

Pet doors can be made of vinyl, plastic, rubber, or polycarbonate material and come in all shapes and sizes (just like your pets do!). Pet doors come in many types, with loads of different features, and can be installed in either wood or glass (or both).

At O’Brien Glass®, we specialise in pet doors suited for glass and can safely install a pet door into your glass panel at home. View our pet door range here.

Why get a pet door?

Simply, having a pet door is a practical and convenient solution for active pets with busy owners.  Pets come with lots of responsibilities and an installing one that fits your home, your pet and your circumstances can be a game changer. Here are a few benefits a pet door can offer.

  1. Pet doors give your pets more freedom

Most pets love to run around the garden, roll around on the grass or just bask in the sunshine. With a handy pet door installed, they can move around and get back in as they please without disturbing you. Gone are the days of leaving the door open or the constant up and down to let your furry family members in and out.

  1. Pet doors encourage your pets to be more active

Allowing your pet to enter and leave as they please will help them stay stimulated and not get bored if they are home all day by themselves.  Whether it’s a door into their cat enclosure or a door to the backyard, having additional space for your pet to come and go can help add to the daily exercise they need and the enrichment to keep them happy.

  1. Pet doors help with toilet training and avoiding indoor accidents

One of the major concerns for pets and homeowners are the little accidents that can happen inside the house. Unfortunately, if your pet can’t get out to the grass, indoor accidents can occur. And when they are young, this can be an arduous task of taking them out many times a day!   So, giving pets easy access to the outside allows them to relieve themselves at their (and your) convenience.

  1. Pet doors can reduce your worry

If you’re running around with a busy schedule, you may sometimes forget that your cat or dog is still inside as you head out or they may be outside as you turn in for the night. With a pet door, they can let themselves in whenever it starts to rain or if it gets too hot outside, so they can be safe in the comfort of your home.

  1. It’s good for the fur parent, too

Having a pet door will save you the time and frustration of having to open and close the door for your pet all day long, not to mention saving on energy costs if you have a heating or cooling system running.

What should you consider when choosing and installing a pet door?

If you’ve been thinking of a pet door for your home, but aren’t sure of what to do next, here are three important things to consider before purchasing a pet door.

  • The size of your pet – you need to choose a pet door that will suit your pet when they are full-grown. Make sure you take measurements of your pet (if fully grown) to check they can get through the door comfortably. After measuring your pet, chat to our pet door specialists and they can recommend the best door option from our range.
  • Where you want to locate the pet door – The best access for your pet to reach the outdoors is via a door, window or panel.  The pet door should open onto an enclosed, secure area like a courtyard, cat enclosure or backyard, and not be visible from the street or passers-by.
  • The type of material the door is to be installed in – Pet doors can be installed in wood or glass. Ensure you have chosen the right type of door (not all pet doors can be installed in glass). Also, most importantly, if you want to install the pet door in an existing glass door or window in your home, you will need an expert glazier’s help to install a pet door safely.

This is where O’Brien Glass® can help. We carry a range of quality pet doors that are suited for installation in glass and can provide a safe, tailor-made solution using toughened glass for installation of your pet door. See all you need to know about our pet door range here.

Every day at O'Brien® is a unique experience. Not only do we try to delight our customers every day, but we try to do the same for our staff.

You’ll usually find Alexis, from our Glazing Solutions Team, behind the scenes talking to customers over the phone and helping to solve their glass needs. But this day, she was lucky enough to join one of our Glaziers in our Sydney team, Martin, out on the road. And it proved to be a very different job experience for the day.

So join us for an action-packed day with Martin and Alexis as they embark on a journey full of appointments and helping customers.

Starting the day right

No day starts without the 8 A.M. meeting with fellow glaziers for a team debrief and run down of the day. It’s a great chance to connect with others in the team, share the adventures ahead, and keep updated with branch news. Martin then loaded the O'Brien® truck with the tools and glass needed for the next two days ahead of appointments. Once Alexis arrived, she put on the required safety kit, and they set off.

Full Steam Ahead

Not every day starts smooth and easy in Glazing! With the first customer no longer available for the day, Martin quickly notified the office planning team leader, who helped move things around. He explained, “You’ ‘ve got to be flexible as your day won’t always go to plan.”

But the day was soon back on track, with the next customer greeting them with an offer of a coffee, which Martin politely declined, and they talked through the broken glass situation in her home. A low-lying panel of grey glass had shattered into sharp shards.

After assessing the situation, Martin quickly determined that ‘safety glass’ was the best solution for this job, which was different to what was initially quoted. However, the customer agreed after Martin explained the relevance of having the correct type of glass in high-risk areas like a bedroom. So, geared up with gloves, gauntlets and glasses, Martin got to work removing the broken shards and installing the new safety glass.

From Alexis’ call centre experience, she shares, “We have to ask lots of questions from our customers to obtain accurate information to determine the correct glass type for the window. However, our experienced glaziers always confirm details once they arrive to ensure that the most suitable glass type is used for reglazing.”

Martin adds, “People trust you when you take time to explain what we are doing and why, especially for their safety and peace of mind. I always want to do what is right for my customers, as they rely on us.”

After Martin cleaned up the area and provided the happy customer with clear instructions for not touching the glass for 24 hours (until the silicone had set), Alexis and Martin were soon on their way again.

Onto the next job

After a scheduled break to rest and recharge, Martin and Alexis were back on the road to another reglazing job for a real estate agent at a tenanted property on the other side of town.

After balancing a tricky access situation and the smell of a nearby compost bin, Martin completed the reglaze of the tenant’s window. Then, a broken glass door panel was the next task.

After assessing the situation, Martin felt a more seamless door repair solution with different glass was needed, so he contacted the real estate agent. Instead of using laminated glass, which would have made the door look a little clunky and not as aesthetically pleasing, he recommended using a thinner, toughened glass for the reglaze (which the agent agreed to proceed with). As toughened glass is made-to-measure (and would need to be ordered and another site visit booked), Martin confirmed the dimensions and then applied sticky plastic film as an interim make-safe solution for the tenant.

“At O'Brien®, we pride ourselves on being glass experts. So, if I’m at a job and can see a better way to do things, I suggest it to the customer. That way, they can decide what is best for their needs,” Martin explained. “People rely on our expertise and appreciate that we are there to help – and that’s exactly what we do.”

Reflection

As the day drew to a close, Alexis shared, “Martin was extremely professional and knowledgeable about the glazing process. It was a great experience to see how a Glazier handles the jobs that arise from the calls I take directly from customers. A full-circle experience! Knowing what happens at on-site glazing jobs helps me to deliver better service to my customers when they call.”

Then it was a quick farewell, with each parting way to head home. As Martin had pre-stocked his truck with glass for the next day’s appointments, he was ready to begin his day of glazing early!

The O'Brien Glass® team can make time in our day for you, too!

Kitchens can get messy – and so they should when cooking up a storm!

With all that mixing, baking, stirring and frying going on, the last thing you want is for your kitchen walls to end up damaged or discoloured. That’s where the faithful glass splashback comes in.

Not only does a glass splashback offer protection against spills and splatters, but it can also add a touch of style to your kitchen area as well.

If you’re looking at renovating your current kitchen or currently building a new one, incorporating glass splashbacks is a great idea to keep the area clean and make it aesthetically pleasing.

What is a splashback?

A splashback is a panel placed on the wall either above the sink, stovetop, or other countertop space in the kitchen, protecting the wall from moisture, oil, food splatters, grease, and any other mess when you’re washing or preparing food. Many different materials can be used as splashbacks, but the most common are tiles, steel, stone, and glass.

How does a splashback affect kitchen designs?

Splashbacks end up covering a lot of surface area in your kitchen so it’s important to consider what type and style your splashback will be when planning your kitchen.

A splashback can also serve as a feature wall and even help revive an outdated kitchen, especially if you have an open-plan layout.

3 benefits of using glass splashbacks in your kitchen

Stylish, modern, easy to clean and infinitely customisable, glass is the most ideal splashback material for the central (and often most used) part of your home.

Here are a few benefits of having a glass splashback as part of your kitchen:

  1. Easy to maintain & keep clean

Unlike tile splashbacks that have hard-to-clean gaps which you need to scrub, glass splashbacks are much easier to maintain and keep clean.

With simple glass-cleaning products, or even just warm water and soap, your food-stained and oily glass splashbacks can look good as new in a few wipes.

  1. More durable

Glass splashbacks, made of toughened safety glass. are naturally more durable compared to stainless steel counterparts.

  1. Versatile and customisable

With glass splashbacks, you can choose from using colour, patterns and even photo effects to match perfectly to your kitchen décor.

With O'Brien Glass® Splashfast Colour System, you can choose from a wide range of decorative glass colours to match your interior with optimal colour clarity using low-iron toughened glass.  Metallic or flat colour options are available.

Remember, glass splashbacks are not limited to kitchens; they can suit all manner of rooms around your home.  Pantries, laundries, and bathrooms are also perfect for this feature too!
